Sign Up Sheet for the Next Weeks

Howdy, cohort! We have four weeks until Thanksgiving. In our individual meetings over the last couple of weeks we talked about the next writing pieces you should be working on. I think this upcoming week should be a research and writing week for everybody, followed by three weeks of workshopping the writing that you are preparing now. Each of you should be pushing for 12-15pp. of new writing. This means that the new writing connected with earlier writing you have done should be moving everybody closer to having a couple of object readings that can be adapted and woven together after Thanksgiving into a longer document that looks more like a first rough draft. E-mail me with questions, proposals, worries, early drafts, and so on.

First Writing Workshop

Howdy, cohort! Many of you already had quite polished readings ready to workshop, others are embarking on new readings to experiment a little with the direction they want the project to go, others may want to workshop their proposals in advance of their Reviews. Choose the first week if you've got something ready to go or you could have by the end of the weekend. Wait till the following week if you need some extra time. Everybody has to sign in for something and it's first come, first served (although I will adjust things later if all parties to an exchange agree to that). Specify your preferences and engage in your wrangling in the comments on the blog for the sign-up sheet post itself. In order to ensure everybody has the time to actually read your work and provide thoughtful feedback please get materials to everybody online by the Tuesday night before your Friday presentation. Everybody should be prepared to comment. In my experience, your writing tends to gain more from the giving of feedback than from the getting of it. Curious, lovely, and true. Hope all is well in your various worlds, d

In Between

Howdy, Cohort! Hope your breaks are going well. We have arrived at a rather in-between time, and depending on where you are in your separate writing and administrative processes your needs are rather different right now. Some of you will have completed your final reviews by our next scheduled meeting, others of you will be on the verge of reviews, others are still deeply immersed in writing... If you would like to meet with me to process a completed review, to game out an upcoming review, or to solicit feedback on writing, schedule an individual meeting with me. Otherwise, take this as a writing week, or e-mail me with questions or writing samples, or what have you. I think enough of you will have completed reviews and begun re-writes that we can spend the next two weeks workshopping new writing together emerging out of that process. Then we'll shift gears very soon to adapting your writing for the symposium. Best to you all! d

Friday

Howdy, cohort, I've gotten two pieces of writing now, and that doesn't seem to me enough to justify a three hour workshop or getting you all to third street, so I am going to get detailed feedback to those who sent me writing and I am going to simply assign presentation slots for next week. Everybody should be at least contacting your committees making initial efforts at scheduling final reviews and perhaps getting early feedback from chairs to ensure the final reviews go as smoothly as possible. And of course many of you have lots of writing to do before the final review actually arrives. Because of that I do think the next two workshops will be pretty important and I do hope everybody works hard and makes the most of them. All will be well, but get to it. Obviously, e-mail with any questions or issues you may have. I'll mass e-mail the presentation schedule for the next two weeks this week-end -- those of you who have strong opinions about going the first or the second week let me know, but the chips will fall as they may. Hope all is well in your worlds, d

Sign Up Sheet for Next Workshop

We decided Friday that there were enough of you at work on new materials -- fresh object readings, conclusions, and so on -- that we could have another productive workshopping day this Friday, the 24th. So, here is the sign-up sheet for that. I'd like at least five of you to sign up for this, so let me know in comments here on via e-mail asap, and be sure to get your materials to all your colleagues by Tuesday night so we all have time to get you good feedback. See you all soon, d

Newsflash!

I've got something going on Friday afternoon which would call me away at least an hour before Friday's workshop is scheduled to conclude. Howzabout we cancel instead and have this week's workshop next week? Everybody take a writing week. Given the fact that nobody scheduled for this week has sent me excerpts yet perhaps this is serendipitous. But, listen people, I am getting a little worried that for some of you the reality of the reality of the deadlines that are looming lacks the palpability in imagination that yields the urgency and drive that should be happening right about now. Don't make me start knocking heads. I've just gotten a very short haircut and I look like I should be barking orders to raw recruits. Don't make me open my whoop ass can! Write, write, write! I'll post the schedule for next week on the blog again, and I emphatically expect excerpts for workshopping to appear in everybody's boxes including my own by midnight Sunday! Anybody with questions about scheduling Final Reviews just e-mail me, anybody with writing excerpts needing feedback (even if you went last week) just send them to me as e-mail attachments. I can possibly be available a couple of hours Tuesday at Chestnut as well next week after noon. All will be well. Get to work! I'm e-mailing this to you all as well, but make sure everybody in the cohort gets this notice since I know you all talk amongst yourselves quite a bit. swak! (the "k" stands for knock-out punch rather than kiss since I am feeling rather stern), d

Workshopping Next Two Weeks

Howdy Cohort -- we'll be workshopping with the whole cohort the next two weeks. Those of you who are assigned slots this upcoming week, do not panic at the nearness of the deadline! I have selected you for the first week because I judged you all to have drafts that were already sufficiently polished or new in the forms I have seen in our individual meetings to warrant discussion by the whole cohort. By all means, if you have revised the drafts, or will have done by the deadline, please send round the newest stuff you've got, but otherwise send what you have as early as you can so that everybody has a chance to give it a thoughtful reading before Friday!

By Friday all of you also have titles and abstracts to submit, so feel free to send those by me if you have concerns (you don't have to send them to me, I'm just reminding you that I am available for that if you are worried). I've enjoyed meeting with you all individually but I'm looking forward to seeing the whole gang together even more. Best, d

First Spring Term Assignment and Meetings Schedule

Only a couple of you have expressed even reluctant interest in meeting during the break, so I think we'll just skip that idea. It's not a problem, schedules and priorities change during break, that's fine. However, I cannot stress strongly enough how the deadlines you face in the Spring Term are going to be crashing in on us, and very soon! I don't want to waste any time, so I am assigning individual meeting times for the first and second weeks of the term. Absolutely no later than the Monday before your scheduled meeting with me I need you to submit to me by e-mail a 30-40pp. rough draft of your thesis. I am very confident every one of you can do this, even if you only get to writing in earnest right now. Your draft should reflect as best you can the feedback you have received from your Chairs and any other committee members who have gotten back to you by now. I also insist that everybody do me the courtesy of editing your writing very carefully for spelling and grammar issues -- which are rather tedious and distracting at this point in the process. Remember, what you want me to be focusing on at this point are issues of organization and argumentation. DO NOT PUT THIS OFF TO THE LAST MINUTE! Begin right now if you have not already done so. Your draft need not have a conclusion already, and I understand that a few of you may have rougher readings for some of your objects even at this stage, but make this draft as polished and complete as you possibly can.

In our individual meetings I will go over my edits of your most recent work, we will discuss together the sorts of feedback and problems you are receiving from your committees (if any), we will strategize how you should direct your attentions over the next month as your final reviews approach, and we will catch up with anything else that may be on your minds. I hope your breaks are going well, I hope your writing is going well, and I'm looking forward to talking with each and every one of you again.

Keep your eyes on the blog -- the spring syllabus and other news will be apprearing soon. Also, feel free to contact me before we meet with questions, problems, pieces of writing, and so on.

Checking In Over the Break

I'm about to put up a sign-in sheet for our Winter Break meeting, but I wanted to be sure first that I remembered correctly the consensus that eventually emerged... we decided to hold the meetings on Monday, January 9, at Yerba Buena Park (weather permitting, a change in venue to a cafe if it's bitter cold or raining or both), is that right? Most of you have sent me writing, but those of you who have produced significant edits, elaborations, new writing since then feel free to get that to me and we can discuss most recent drafts next week when we meet. How is everybody doing? Definitely the schedule gets a bit more hectic in the Spring term so do be sure your focus has shifted from holiday grog to producing polished drafts!
