Workshopping Next Two Weeks

Howdy Cohort -- we'll be workshopping with the whole cohort the next two weeks. Those of you who are assigned slots this upcoming week, do not panic at the nearness of the deadline! I have selected you for the first week because I judged you all to have drafts that were already sufficiently polished or new in the forms I have seen in our individual meetings to warrant discussion by the whole cohort. By all means, if you have revised the drafts, or will have done by the deadline, please send round the newest stuff you've got, but otherwise send what you have as early as you can so that everybody has a chance to give it a thoughtful reading before Friday!

By Friday all of you also have titles and abstracts to submit, so feel free to send those by me if you have concerns (you don't have to send them to me, I'm just reminding you that I am available for that if you are worried). I've enjoyed meeting with you all individually but I'm looking forward to seeing the whole gang together even more. Best, d

First Spring Term Assignment and Meetings Schedule

Only a couple of you have expressed even reluctant interest in meeting during the break, so I think we'll just skip that idea. It's not a problem, schedules and priorities change during break, that's fine. However, I cannot stress strongly enough how the deadlines you face in the Spring Term are going to be crashing in on us, and very soon! I don't want to waste any time, so I am assigning individual meeting times for the first and second weeks of the term. Absolutely no later than the Monday before your scheduled meeting with me I need you to submit to me by e-mail a 30-40pp. rough draft of your thesis. I am very confident every one of you can do this, even if you only get to writing in earnest right now. Your draft should reflect as best you can the feedback you have received from your Chairs and any other committee members who have gotten back to you by now. I also insist that everybody do me the courtesy of editing your writing very carefully for spelling and grammar issues -- which are rather tedious and distracting at this point in the process. Remember, what you want me to be focusing on at this point are issues of organization and argumentation. DO NOT PUT THIS OFF TO THE LAST MINUTE! Begin right now if you have not already done so. Your draft need not have a conclusion already, and I understand that a few of you may have rougher readings for some of your objects even at this stage, but make this draft as polished and complete as you possibly can.

In our individual meetings I will go over my edits of your most recent work, we will discuss together the sorts of feedback and problems you are receiving from your committees (if any), we will strategize how you should direct your attentions over the next month as your final reviews approach, and we will catch up with anything else that may be on your minds. I hope your breaks are going well, I hope your writing is going well, and I'm looking forward to talking with each and every one of you again.

Keep your eyes on the blog -- the spring syllabus and other news will be apprearing soon. Also, feel free to contact me before we meet with questions, problems, pieces of writing, and so on.

Checking In Over the Break

I'm about to put up a sign-in sheet for our Winter Break meeting, but I wanted to be sure first that I remembered correctly the consensus that eventually emerged... we decided to hold the meetings on Monday, January 9, at Yerba Buena Park (weather permitting, a change in venue to a cafe if it's bitter cold or raining or both), is that right? Most of you have sent me writing, but those of you who have produced significant edits, elaborations, new writing since then feel free to get that to me and we can discuss most recent drafts next week when we meet. How is everybody doing? Definitely the schedule gets a bit more hectic in the Spring term so do be sure your focus has shifted from holiday grog to producing polished drafts!
